Your Dermatology
Questions Answered

By now, you’ve probably heard that skin is the largest organ of the human body. It protects us from scalp to sole, but, unfortunately, that doesn’t mean we always know how to care for it. Thankfully, there are medical professionals to help!

What Can Dermatologists Do?

Dermatologists are specialists in skin, nails, and hair. They can screen for problems and treat issues including:

  • skin cancer

  • acne

  • eczema

  • allergies

  • spider and varicose veins

  • cysts

  • moles

  • and more!

Some of these concerns are irritating and others can be life-threatening.

When Should You See a Dermatologist?

If you’ve never visited a dermatologist, you should schedule your initial visit now! Regular visits to a dermatologist ensure they can identify any concerns with your skin, especially possibly cancerous spots. Not all skin cancers are dangerous, but undetected melanoma cancer can rapidly spread to other parts of your body and cause serious health problems.

Once you’re established with a dermatologist, they will recommend an appointment cycle, usually 6 months or 1 year before visits. At each visit, they can check for skin cancer, address any rashes, allergies, or other skin issues that may have popped up, and provide tips for better skin care.

If you mention your skin concerns in an appointment with your primary care physician, they may be able to refer you to a dermatologist who is accepting new patients or is in your insurance network.

Is Dermatology Covered by Medicare?

Some dermatological treatments are covered under Medicare Part B. Dermatology deemed medically necessary for the evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment of a specific medical condition is likely covered. For example, routine skin exams would not be covered, but skin exams performed as a result of the symptoms or indication of skin cancer would be covered. As with all Medicare-covered services, you are responsible for the 20% coinsurance as well as your part B premium. Cosmetic treatments or non-medical issues such as acne, injections, fillers, microdermabrasion, peels, and masks would not be covered.
