Medicare Part D expanded coverage for some preventative vaccines as of January 1, 2023. The Biden-Harris Administration introduced the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, which provides coverage for the shingles and Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap) vaccines.

Medicare Part D fully covers the cost for both vaccines. This means Medicare beneficiaries will have no out-of-pocket costs. You will be able to receive the vaccines for no charge, whether you have Part D in conjunction with Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or bundled with a Medicare Advantage plan.

What is Part D?

Medicare Part D, also known as prescription drug coverage, is offered by private insurance companies. Part D is offered as an addition to Medicare Parts A and B. Beneficiaries can get Part D coverage alongside Original Medicare or bundled in a Part C Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan. Medicare Part D is optional, but late enrollees may be subject to a fee.

Where can you get Part-D-covered vaccines?

Your Medicare-approved doctor’s office or pharmacy may be able to administer the shingles and Tdap vaccines.
